Head Lice: Natural Treatment Options
“Head lice” is a term that strikes fear in the hearts of parents of school-age children everywhere. “What do I do now?” is their first thought. Take heart. Although head and pubic lice are now resistant to the common chemicals that have been used to kill them in the past, there are new alternative treatments that will rid your child of this annoying pest.
The most common alternative treatment for head lice involves covering the child’s head with a thick oil or cream. Mayonnaise is a favored choice, although olive oil, conditioner, or vegetable oil will also work. The head needs to be covered with a shower cap and the oil left overnight. In the morning, the lice will have suffocated, and they can be removed with a lice comb.
Tea tree oil, sourced from an Australian tree, is another good alternative treatment for head lice removal. This oil has unique anti-fungal and anti-vermicidal properties. A conditioner with a high percentage of tea tree oil would be ideal for the purpose. Just like mayonnaise, this too needs to be applied and left overnight, covered with a shower cap. The lice can be combed away in the morning.
Altering your child’s diet by adding brewer’s yeast and garlic can possibly provide an option for getting rid of head lice. Although some people swear by this treatment, it may have little or no effect as far as scientists are concerned. The basic premise is that introducing these two safe, tasty substances into your child’s body will produce an unpleasant environment for the lice. In addition to altering diet, you will also need to do repeated combings for nits.
A final option is the plain old fashioned plan of removing every single insect and nit by hand. This has the advantage of costing nothing, being with any concerns about toxic substances, and of being effective when you are persistent. It requires real commitment and diligence for as much as 14 days and is very time consuming. It may be chosen when nothing else has worked as a final option, and is much simple if you have a child with short hair or if you cut it short to treat lice this way.
Whatever method you choose to use to eliminate head lice from your home and child’s head, whether traditional, herbal, oil-based, or manual, you need to remember that time and patience will pay off. Keep in mind that you need to sterilize all bedding, hats, carpets, upholstered furniture, clothing, and any other items in your home where nits may be hiding.
The following are alternative methods for the treatment of head lice or pubic lice. Mayonnaise and other oils are used to coat areas, covered and left on all night. There are preparations of tea tree oil available. Let it sit and comb out the lice. Adding brewer’s yeast and garlic to your child’s diet can get rid of lice. The manual treatment for removing lice requires repeatedly combing the child’s hair for lice and nits each day for fourteen days with a lice comb. Lice are persistent and require complete treatment to get rid of hem.
