It is common to find head lice in children who go to daycare centers or school. These are transfered from the children to adults. A person having lice should not be look down as it is something, which is very common and might happen to anyone in a person’s life.
One gets head lice by direct or indirect contact with someone else that has lice. Once someone in a family comes in contact with lice, it spreads quickly to other family members and friends that those people spend time with. Lice can live on hats, clothing, and furniture for up to 3 days without human contact, leaving the unsuspecting victim often clueless as to how the lice was caught.
Stopping the growth and spread of head lice is a priority for people responsible for children. Some daycare centers and preschools demand that children’s clothing be stored separated from others to prevent the spread of lice through contact with other children’s apparel. Head lice is quickly transferred from one child to another if caps or any type of head gear is shared. That is the reason some sports teams require individual protective head gear for each player.
While everyone has their own way to get rid of lice, most doctors agree that head lice is best treated with over the counter or prescription chemicals that the person who has lice leaves on their hair for a certain period of time before washing it out. After this, all of the lice eggs (also called nits) have to be combed out of the hair with a special fine toothed comb.
Organic products provide alternative methods of treating louse. Many methods use specially manufactured organic shampoos or lotions, and still other methods provide instructions for using other household goods rather than the harsher chemicals prescribed by many doctors. An example of this last method is soaking hair in baby or vegetable oil overnight. This is said to smother the lice, thus killing the infestation.
The lice which appear in one type of hair are quite separate from pubic lice. Since the bugs are different, they must be managed in a unique manner. Keep in mind that the presence of lice in one place is not indicative of an infestation elsewhere.
